Because the mountains of the world are so…. big… and because they aren’t moving, at least not visibly, we assume that they’ve been there for many millions of years, looking much as they do now (click the title to read on).
And that’s what our masters in the secular scientific community tell us: The mountains move by two inches a year, so if you do the math, you’ll find they’ve been there for a very long time…right?
Not necessarily.
There’s a car outside of my house. It isn’t moving at all. You could stand there and watch it all day, and it will not move an inch. Therefore, using the above logic, my car must have been there for…well…for ever.
Of course, we know how the car got there, and that it was moving at considerable speed in the immediate past. But the point in relation to mountains is that just because they are barely moving now, doesn’t mean that they weren’t moving faster at some time in the past.
“…on that day all the fountains of the great deep were broken up…” (Genesis 7:11 NKJV).
Creationists have done the math according to Biblical passages relating to the Flood of the time of Noah. When “the fountains of the great deep were broken up” as Genesis chapter seven states, it’s very possible that this event is related to the crust of the earth beginning to break open, and to move, at considerable speed. Under the crust may have been, as there is still, a huge volume of water, not to mention molten rock. Not coincidentally, basalt forms the bulk of the crust in the great oceans basins.
One scientist, John Baumgardner, is credited with laying out and solidifying the idea of runaway movement of the crust, when he created a super-computer model for the Flood while working in government laboratories as a geologist (1). The model demonstrated how rapid movement of the crust of the earth, and resultant runaway subduction during and after the great Flood, could have shaped the world as we see it today.
In the beginning, evolutionists and creationists agree, there was just one super-continent, which secular geologists have named “Pangea”. The secular people will tell you that this land mass broke apart and drifted at about the speed it’s moving today, hence the hundreds of millions of years it would have taken to reach its current state. But rapid breakup of the crust, and runaway subduction, could have made the whole process much much faster. As Dr Andrew Snelling, a creation geologist, has said, the only way the Himalayas could have been created is if moving plates of crust crashed into each other at considerable speed (2).
According to Scripture, the Flood lasted for about a year (not forty days). Rapid movement within this time, and likely for some time after, explains the great mountain ranges we have today, since plate crashed into plate, some subducting and pushing others up, creating collosal eruptions and tsunamis, and local catastrophes as the earth’s surface settled and the water moved down into the ocean basins. In this scenario the present is most definitely not the key to the past.
Enormous amounts of water were pushed over the continents during the Flood, first ripping up and pulverising rock in super-fast erosion, then depositing thousands of feet of sedimentary layers. All of this action destroyed life on the earth, and produced billions of fossils. In many places marine creatures are found fossilized with land-dwelling creatures, while multiple species are found buried together in mass graves. Such facts are not trumpeted by the secular people, who would rather keep you in the dark.
So the “car” of moving crust, and the enormous amounts of sediment created by catastrophic movement of the oceans, moved at great speed… “yesterday”. Today, the earth’s crust is pretty much settled. Not completely, of course: we still have earthquakes, and relatively minor tsunamis and floods, due to a little movement of the plates, but in comparison to “yesterday”, when the turmoil of the Flood was in process, things are pretty quiet.
Now we can study what happened. Those who are not believers in the Biblical God, don’t want to be, and don’t want you to be either, tell us one story, while those who do believe tell another. This “other” story, the more you look at it with an open mind, is powerful evidence that the God of the Bible is indeed real, as is the truth of His word and His story of the earth.
In this regard, a group of people have produced a sequel to a very popular and successful movie, with its offshoots. The first was called “Is Genesis History?” now with 4.6 million views on YouTube, along with several related or partial videos. You can see it-free-in its entirety on the link below (5).
The newly published sequel is titled“Mountains After the Flood” (4). In this movie, host Del Tacket interviews several creationist scientists (who all have impressive credentials and experience) and follows them on some field studies. The initial result is some incredible evidence for the Flood as written in Genesis. And more than that, it’s visually stunning, showing us some of earth’s beautiful mountain ranges and formations, and how they support the record of the Flood. I recommend it highly.
Remember also that there are plenty of other creation scientists. A few take part in this documentary: others do not. Some of those “others” are, perhaps, on the fringes in regards to solid Biblical and scientific theory and reason (some are unbiblical) but others are trust-worthy people with a ton of talent, insight and faith. I will just mention here Dr. Timothy Clarey, who worked as a geologist in the oil drilling business for many years before starting his research as a creationist. The title of one of his impressive books on this subject is below (3).
