The Beauty of God

The Beauty of God extends far beyond what we see or what we imagine God is like. If you superimpose all that is in creation upon what the Word of God, the Bible, says about Him, you have to conclude that the beauty of God is just one more infinite attribute of His being.

And it’s not just what we can see or touch or hear that speaks of His beauty, because as Scripture-the Bible-declares frequently, the beauty of God includes-or perhaps is epitomised-by His character:

Worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness;
    tremble before him, all the earth
(Psalm 96:9).

As I’ve tried to describe many times before, scientists are not, as they think, studying what is separate from God, so that they’ve chased Him-their own understanding of God-into a few little corners of the universe which we don’t yet understand. Instead all that they see, know and study is a product of His creative power. All that we see around us – the ocean, the trees, the ground we stand on, the sun, each other, is designed, made, and exists because God designed and made it. No God, no universe. Miss that, and you can’t see the wood for the trees.

When someone we love, or someone famous and revered and admired passes away, we wonder how it is that someone-something – so beautiful and so wonderful can cease to exist, at least in our physical realm. It’s a painful separation; an unnatural and wrenching loss. We love some people, or perhaps our pets, to such a degree that we can’t bear to be parted from them. And while people are yet alive and with us, we sometimes fail to recognize how beautiful and how significant they are to us.

Those without God in their hearts admire what He has made, without attributing the beauty to the One who designed it. There would be no beauty without God. There would be no sunsets, no flowers, no gurgling babies, no chorus of voices, and no love… had the Creator of all things not made it. When you’re experiencing anything in all of creation, you’re getting a taste of the infinite power of God.

The important thing is to peer over those things that make our hearts swell and our minds buzz with joy and pleasure. The sunset didn’t make itself-God did. The gurgling baby didn’t create itself: it was designed by that incredible Mind who is above all things. That strikingly good-looking woman didn’t make herself beautiful at all. In fact, her character may well betray her physical make-up. It’s God, the Artist, who originally fashioned the beauty of woman and man. Her beauty came from God-from HIs imagination, from HIs power, and from the work of His metaphorical hands.

Therefore, instead of giving all the glory to the things which God has made, let’s give it to He who made it all, who sustains it all, and who ultimately owns it all.
