A Scientist Challenges Standard Beliefs on the Origin of Life

A large percentage of people among the general public are sure that scientists can create life in the lab, and that scientists know how life evolved from non-life. The opposite is true: they have no truly scientific idea how it happened.

Dr. James Tour is a synthetic organic chemist, and has been a professor in secular universities for thirty- six years. He admits openly, “I am somewhat unique, in that I love Jesus more than anything else in the world”. When describing and defending his career and credentials, he says, “I do real science-I don’t just talk about science”. “I publish about twenty-five research papers a year, all of them peer-reviewed”.

Tour has made a big splash in recent years in the scientific community, by challenging biologists and evolutionists in general to come up with a means by which life could have evolved from non-life. He has laid out in detailed scientific term the incredible difficulties he sees which prevent any such event or process. Don’t expect his opponents to buckle and humbly admit the truth-most have no intention of doing so.

Critics accuse Tour of invoking a “god of the gaps”. That is, whatever can’t yet be explained is where Tour imagines his God to be. But Tour denies this accusation, and instead says, “I just don’t know a model for how it (life) formed, and nobody else knows it…. they can’t even propose a model….”

Tour insists that,

“The soup-to-life model is not a matter of fact at all”.

Tour says in a recent video interview that he didn’t cause any controversy as a scientist until recent years, and begins to explain how he made such a stir and such a name for himself as an opponent of the standard secular explanation for life on earth.

Six or seven years ago, says Tour, he began to critique an area of study called “origin of life”. Origin of life predates evolution. For evolution to start, you have to have the first cell, but how did we get that first cell; that first life? This subject is called “abiogenesis”. That is, before biological life.

“As I started to study the literature and what people had to say about it I was just amazed at the claims that they were making”.

Says Tour tells us that he works in the area of nanotechnology: nanomaterials, nanoelectronics, nanomedicine and so on. He was at a seminar one day on the complex nature of carbohydrates, and as he listened, he thought, “Man, it’s hard to see how these things would have evolved”. A colleague, who was a journal editor suggested Tour write an article on the subject, so he started looking into it. He traced the chemical makeup of relevant molecules backwards and eventually questioned the first cell, and asked the question, “Where does life come from?”

Tour came to realize that the claims of evolutionists concerning the origin of life were completely false:

“To me, as a synthetic chemist, we know what molecules do: we study the action of molecules one with another. We learn what causes them to assemble, we learn what causes them to break down: how they progress, outside of a biological system. And this was what I was studying, and I felt that the claims that had been made by the origin of life research community were so far overblown that is was not good. It was not healthy for the field. They would find a little result and make these broad extrapolations beyond that”.

Tour describes some surveys taken from the general public aged in their mid-thirties, at education levels all the way from nothing more than high school up to PhD. Two thirds of those surveyed believed that scientists had made living organisms such as a bacterium in their labs. One third even believed scientists had made more complex organisms such as frogs.

“Boths of those are so wrong. We haven’t even made anything near a single cell in the lab”

Tour decided that this problem of people believing scientists had created life came from basic claims made in scientific literature, which had been taken up by the press and put into textbooks. That’s what was taught.

Tour lampoons what he calls “The whole primordial soup model” believed by most people, and which is totally untrue:

You have some pond or some pool full of molecules in water, and there’s some lightening strikes and those molecules assemble into a cell. Those cells assemble into higher order groups of cells called “organisms”, and towards more complex organisms-multicellular organisms-and those come out of the pond and there we go, and everything takes over from there”.

Instead, states Tour,

“We don’t know how that first cell started- we have no idea. So I started talking about this and challenging these people.
