Multitudes of people who pride themselves in having open minds are not interested in considering the God of the Bible for a single minute. Just about anything else is allowed in there, and even sought after, in the hope that what’s being introduced to that already confused mass of ideas and philosophies will enrich the entire mix.
It’s rather like putting all the ingredients from your kitchen into a bowl: flour, watermelon, cheese, crackers, cereal, potatoes, mustard, fish, and a dash of dish soap, and mixing it all up, in the hope that a delicious gourmet meal will result.
I have friends from my BC days who will listen to almost anything in terms of ideas and experience: alien abduction, contacting the dead, mother earth having personality, Buddhist philosophy and so on, but will give not one minute to ponder the Christian message that God loves them so much he sent His only son to die for them. How can this be explained as anything but a spiritual phenomenon?
Why is the Christian God so abhorrent, so scary, and so un-palatable as to be completely ignored? What He offers is beyond what any of us could dream up: eternal life with the creator of the universe, defined in Scripture as “Love”, completely free. All that’s required is the beneficiary’s love and commitment.
Truth isn’t a mixture of conflicting and clashing ideas: it’s a purity, a focus, a singleness with integrity and unity. It makes sense when considered as a whole. It can be applied to any aspect or event in life. It stands up to reality. You can look it in the face. The mixers and blenders, however, see as no consequence the fact that blending a multitude of conflicting philosophies makes no logical sense at all.
Even in the Church large numbers of professing believers dabble in whatever takes their fancy. They treat the Bible like a box of fortune cookies. They take one out now and then, and apply it to whatever they want it to be applied to. Truth with a capital “T” is out of style, not just in politics and entertainment and education, but in the minds of professing Christians who are convinced that they have the freedom to decide what’s true for them, with no negative consequence.
Christians who are Biblical are accused of being closed minded or narrow minded. That’s fine with me, because I agree with my God that the way to life is narrow, and few find it, whereas the road to destruction is broad, and many go that way (Matthew 7:13-14).
Being true to yourself involves facing up to solid, testable logic: one you can wrap your arms around. Numerous conflicting ideas cannot all be true. You can’t create a mixture of thoughts and entrust your life and your eternity to that concoction.
Here’s what Jesus Christ has to say on the matter:
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me (John 14:6).
