Believing God or Concocting Excuses?

How old is the world? It pains me to hear Christian ministers explaining away the word of God, when the motivation can be nothing other than having a greater respect for the word of man. This comes into play in a sharp and stark fashion when the creation and the age of the earth are mentioned. Suddenly ministers claiming to be fully on board with the inspired word of God are reciting explanations and excuses for what the Scripture “really says”.

For example, when Genesis tells us that God made the world “in six days”, Scripture doesn’t mean what it says according to these people, and we need experts to tell us what God really meant to say. Six days means billions of years, according to those among us who have decided that the world of science trumps the word of God. Well, I hate to pop anyone’s bubble, but the terms “science” and “evolution” are not synonymous. True science is observable, testable fact, and I can quote priests of evolution who have admitted that the major events of evolution are not repeatable, cannot be observed, and cannot be tested under the microscope.

BE CONSISTENT

If you believe in the evolution of the earth and of life, you’re believing in a story which has been put forth and promoted by people who are trying to circumnavigate the fact that in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. If you want to be consistent, you will say that there is no God at all, because a majority in the standard scientific community will tell you that science has proved there is no God. Believe mainstream “science” and you will have to also believe that there is no God, and that miracles don’t happen.

WHICH STORY DO YOU WANT TO BELIEVE?

Now don’t misquote me: I said nothing about fairy tales, I’m talking about actual evidence. No-one has seen life evolve from non-life; therefore the story of evolution is just that: a story. You can insist if you wish that creation ex-nihilo is also just a story, but if you want to claim to be a believer in Jesus Christ as the son of God, and if you want to claim that God does miracles and is supreme and omnipresent and so on, perhaps you should also consider the possibility that He is able to tell the truth without hiding meaning or without saying something totally opposite to what He has said.

POETRY?

The enlightened among us try to tell us that the early verses of Genesis which speak of days are only poetic, and that the evolutionists are so clever and powerful that they must be right when they say the cosmos is fourteen billion years old and the earth four. When I was at school the cosmos was twenty billion years old, according to the experts. Six billion years disappeared from the record in just a few decades. Could it possibly be that the experts of our time are also mistaken, or that they don’t really know?

DAYS OR EONS?

I could go into the detail of the early chapters of Genesis and how the use of the word “day” when associated with numbers always refers to literal days in the Old Testament, and that it makes the matter more plain by speaking of “evening” and “morning”. How could you miss it? However, instead I want to quote what God told the Israelites in the wilderness:

“Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God… “For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy” (Exodus 20:9-11).

For those of you wondering – no, I am not an Adventist. Instead, I’m pointing out what God has said about the age of the earth. Do you believe Him, or not? You’re in a sticky place here if you want to claim that these days are billions of years or just poetry, because God is comparing what He has done with what He is instituting as a way of life for all humanity. No-one works for billions of years and then takes a billion years off for the weekend.

HOW BIG IS YOUR GOD?

It really all boils down to your view of God. If He is the indescribable God of Scripture – the I AM – then He is able to make a blind man see instantly, without years of “improvement” or medical treatment. He is able to raise the dead instantly. He is able to calm the sea and to turn water into wine on the spot. God is a miracle worker: can you not see that? He is omnipotent. The record of Exodus shows us that He does not take kindly to those who refuse to believe His total and awesome power over all things.

In reference to creation, pope Francis stated that God “…does not have a magic wand”. If you are unable to acknowledge God’s powers, said in Scripture to be without limit, you are shrinking Him. You are diminishing the glory He deserves. You are making out that God is limited, and equally as bad, you are making out that He fabricates the truth or disguises it, while human experts who are averse to the very existence of God only tell us the truth.

THE EXPERT IN CHIEF: GOD

I have no respect for the minister who asks the rhetorical question first spoken in the Garden by a certain serpent: “Has God really said….?” I have no respect for those who say that it took God billions of years to bring it all together, or even that God only had a hand in the evolution of life and of humanity. I will proudly stand up and agree with the word of God when it says that He created all things that exist. I accept in faith that in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth, in six literal days. He didn’t need any help from old Father Time, which He created anyway.

Your word is true oh Lord, and it doesn’t need “experts” from the bias of godless humanity to interpret for us.

  1. Good day. This was very well-said, simple and profound at the same time. I particularly liked this statement: “If you are unable to acknowledge God’s powers, said in Scripture to be without limit, you are shrinking Him. You are diminishing the glory He deserves. You are making out that God is limited, and equally as bad, you are making out that He fabricates the truth or disguises it, while human experts who are averse to the very existence of God only tell us the truth.” Keep up the good work. God bless you.
