I don’t often take a diversion from the subject of apologetics on my blog, but here’s one exception. My son and I are producing some original instrumental music, and I decided to share it with my readers…
We are collectively named “Sherbet Image”. Our music is not overtly Christian or religious, but it is written by Christians and inspired by a love for our faith, and for the world our God has created.
“Canyonlands” is the latest release of ours, written by yours truly. Four weeks ago we released a tune composed by my son called “Shores of Florence”. Our music can be streamed from most streaming services and can be downloaded from some, such as Amazon Music. I will post some links below for anyone who would like to sample our music.
THE GOAL OF SHERBET IMAGE
Sherbet Image aim to “Evoke and Explore”: to learn from the lofty examples of jazz giants, to create ambience evoking images of places and experiences, and to strike out and create new things. At the heart of this goal is the desire to please fans and listeners, and to glorify our God with the talents He’s given us.
THE STYLE AND APPEAL OF “CANYONLANDS”.
“Canyonlands” leads you on with a smooth, haunting melody, then takes you into a more upbeat solo groove, and finally leaves you feeling warm and fuzzy all over. Canyonlands, an instrumental, is somewhat “smooth” in style, but can be best described as “jazz-fusion”. It’s predominantly real music played with real instruments…and real talent. More than that, it’s played, written and arranged with feeling, and recorded and produced for maximum dynamic effect.
THE MUSICIANS
Nathan, whose main role is as trumpet player, all-around front man and musical wower, has been inspired by greats such as Miles Davis, Louis Armstrong, Freddie Hubbard, Wynton Marsalis, and more recently, Till Bronner. Sax legend John Coltrane also features greatly in Nathan’s style. Nathan is currently studying jazz performance as a graduate at UNT, Denton, Texas, where he’s at the centre of sound in the top jazz band.
I (Nick) composed and arranged “Canyonlands”, played bass on this recording, and wrote the percussion and piano parts. I’m a veteran of several musical styles. My biggest influences from the world of jazz have been Stanley Clarke, Ron Carter, Eddie Gomez and Jaco Pastorius, and from the world of progressive rock, Ray Schulman of Gentle Giant and Yes’s Chris Squire.
