Tongues-speakers today are proudly disengaging their minds when they use the claimed gift: they have no idea what they are saying, if anything, and neither does anyone else. The practise of being "slain in the Spirit" similarly seeks to vacate the mind and "let the Spirit take over", causing people to apparently pass out on the floor and lay there - once they've adjusted their clothing - sometimes for hours, in what appears to be a comatose state.
A passage of Paul's letter to the Romans is commonly held up as "exhibit A" in support of the practice of "praying in tongues". However, when you really look at it closely, you see that these verses have nothing to do at all with tongues.
Should we pray in tongues? Is the gift of tongues for prayer, and is a prayer in tongues more powerful? Does the Holy Spirit pray for people who speak in tongues, providing a deeper level of ministry to those with the gift? I answer these questions here.
Does God speak to His people? If so, in what way does He speak? Is it in an audible voice, where words can be heard and understood clearly? Does He speak frequently in this way, or even all the time?
