BELT UP

In our time truth is being revised, stolen, fudged, replaced, hidden, defaced, trashed, ignored, vilified, attacked, and compromised…

The news media, along with the entertainment world, is largely a tool of those wanting to shake the world into darkness and godlessness. In fulfillment of Orwell’s warnings, “news” is now propaganda. Education is indoctrination. The attack on truth is no less active in the church than out of it: it’s in the songs, the sermons, the pronouncements, and the theology.

We could almost despair, throw up our hands, and join in the abandonment of logic, reason, self-control and honest soul-searching, but that’s just what our enemy wants us to do. He doesn’t want us to stand firm: he wants us to fall into a state of moral and spiritual confusion, corruption and error, along with all those who either have no desire for Truth or who are so blinded that they will never find it anyway.

“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” (Ephesians 6:11-12).

Where is Truth? Where does it come from? How can we grasp it and hold on to it? Paul told us to “put on the full armor of God” in order to tackle the assaults of our enemy, who is currently rampaging all around us-even in our own families and our churches. And part of that armor is “the belt of truth” (verse 14). This is how we can “stand firm”- by putting on the belt of truth, along with all those other pieces of spiritual armor which are inextricably linked with the physical world.

What is truth? Jesus Christ answered the question:

Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth (John 17:17).

God’s word is Truth. Jesus Christ is the Word. Jesus Christ is truth:

“I am the way and the truth and the life” John 14:6).

The only way the willing among us can hold on to truth is through the word of truth. That is, not…I say not the pronouncements of “experts” or even those claiming to be spirit-filled, but the written words-found in Biblical Scripture; and through the Son of God, who is Truth.
