As a professing Christian I need to have my Creator at the forefront of my heart and mind. Second in importance is my family and all those I come in contact with during the day.
At my Sunday school we sang a little song:
J-O-Y, J-O-Y, surely this must mean
Jesus first, yourself last and others in between.
However, there’s no need to neglect my self-the part of Creation that God gave to me. While self comes last on the list of priorities, there’s a place for taking good care of yourself, (“love your neighbor as yourself”) and that’s what too many of us fail to do. It seems to me that the world is sliding into the abyss as quickly as it can go-led by our politicians and our media people. All around you can see people losing their sanity and their sense of reason, and their judgment, direction, and hope: How can I maintain my own mental and spiritual integrity and strength?
There are so many elements to self-care. Getting those first two priorities right will go a long way. Then, controlling our own minds and our bodies is vitally important, and feeding our souls on the Words of God. If we base our thoughts on truth and not the stupidity of human reasoning-ours or others’-we can stand apart from the world, on our own little island of sanity, and feel the glow of God’s faithfulness and love.
