Elections, Insanity, and the Meaning of Life

Every two and half seconds, give or take a little, the national debt of the United States increases by one hundred thousand dollars (1). That’s the money you and I owe. All of us are affected, even those who don’t work. It’s not the government’s problem, because they thrive on spending our money.

“God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7).

In a few weeks more than half the population of the U.S. will likely vote to retain the same kinds of people in government who have been putting us all in debt, getting us into wars, and making it harder for us to get by financially. I’ve heard one definition of insanity as the determination to continue to do something the wrong way: millions of people are going to vote again for self-serving, corrupt and inept politicians. Perhaps we could blame this habit on a lack of information: people just don’t realize what serious trouble we’re in. Or perhaps we really have, as a nation, lost our minds.

Our culture is being taken over by a mental and spiritual illness. You can see it in our media, in our entertainment, in our homes, in our schools, on our roads and in our finances.

FREAK SHOW

This may sound a little harsh to some of you, but it seems to me when I attend the mall these days that I’m in some sort of a freak show. I’ve always been one to want variety in humanity-in appearance and in tastes and character-but it hasn’t happened how I had hoped. I never wanted to feel threatened, shocked, disgusted or sad to see what’s happening to my brothers and sisters in the flesh.

There’s nothing beautiful or good about the change. I’ve lived long enough to see a steady and strong decline in character, in personality, in physical and mental health, in style, in dress, in manners and attitudes, in the arts, in intelligence and in wisdom. We have more knowledge now, but in few things that are worthwhile. We are being dumbed down to accept the basest and the lowest common denominators in so many aspects of life.

WHERE GOD IS IN ALL OF THIS

I can’t help wondering sometimes why God bothers with us. Why would He send His only son to die…for us? I wouldn’t. I admit to Him that were I God, I would not, could not have sent my son to die for humanity. I would leave us all to our self-destruction, go somewhere else in the universe and start all over again.

God does love us enough to send His only son. However, He doesn’t want us to stay as we are. He will accept as we are initially, but He wants us to change. He has a far higher calling for those of us who are willing to respond. And this is the calling:

“…the true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth” (John 4:23-24).

God is seeking worshippers from the masses of humanity. He wants people who will turn from their emptiness and love Him to their very core. The creator of all things wants you and I to ascend to something far, far greater than what our culture offers us; to a greater and more worthwhile form of life.

Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst? (1 Corinthians 3:16).

ELECTION TIME

The United States is on course for a gigantic disaster. Can one man or a few men, if elected this November, save us from ourselves and from the mockers and degraders of humanity? I’m a Trump lover myself, but I have to admit that even if he’s elected, we can’t expect Him to be able to do all that needs to be done- it’s impossible. A large ocean-going vessel requires miles to change course, even if the correct operations are implemented: the same is true of our culture in America and the West.

I will vote for and pray for him: I think he’s a great man-one of the greatest, in human terms. However, he doesn’t even seem to see the spiritual nature of our problems. Economics are important, and truth in government and media is important, but these things alone will not change our course in just a few short years, if ever, particularly as the minions of Satan himself will be working hard to prevent any turnaround anyway. Will our God step in, or has He given up on America? Will He let us have what we ask for, that is, disaster?

WHAT CAN WE DO?

What can we do? The first obvious answer is that we must pray. Pray for our own discernment and salvation. Pray for all those in authority, as this is the Godly thing to do. Pray that good people will be elected rather than demon-possessed haters of truth. Pray that more people will begin to see the light. Pray for our neighbours and people we interact with. Pray that God will have mercy on the nation and on the West as a whole.

Secondly, we must respond to the call of our God. We must worship in spirit and in truth. What does that entail? That’s the subject for another post, but perhaps Jesus defined it succinctly for us:

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength” (Mark 12:30).

While the world of men and women is losing its collective mind, we must give ours to our Creator. We can keep our sanity by loving the author of all Truth.

GUARD YOUR MIND

We also need to protect our minds. Stop watching the garbage and listening to the lies of the media. Stop being filled with fear fed to us by our enemy. Guard against insanity by trusting in God and walking in His ways. Learn and enjoy higher things and beautiful things. Take in the Word of God regularly, and by that I mean the Bible. Recognise that our universe is the creation of an infinite, almighty God, who will one day claim it back from those who have attempted to steal it.

Remember that you, if you have given yourself to Christ in repentance and submission to His will and in the acceptance of His gospel, are a temple of the living God, and a part of a greater Temple-the world-wide Church of true believers. Your temple includes your mind, your body, your soul, your spirit, and the little part of the world around you that you can control. Treat your mind and your body as a holy temple, and worship the God who made you, in spirit and in truth.
