The phrase, "the tip of the iceberg" is a common metaphor for things of consequence which are only visible or detectable in part. In comparison they are almost entirely beneath the surface, unseen and unappreciated. The most significant fact of course, as the sad story of the Titanic tells us, is that the unseen part is every bit as real and as solid as that which is seen. So it is with life itself.
Many of us secretly or even openly wish we were special in some way. We admire the celebrities, the successful and the achievers, and we quietly judge ourselves for being plain or for being nobodies. Yet almost all of us miss the one simple opportunity to become very special.
Isn't it interesting that you can at the same time want your foot to go one way and yet make it go another. You can want to do something and yet not want to do it.
Should we as Christians forget our differences with those of other faiths? Should we all get together in one big love-feast; compromise; build bridges; accept other beliefs and new ways of thinking?
I've done it myself, and I would venture to say you have too. I've sat in church listening to a good sermon, and thought one of two things: "I hope so-and-so is listening to this" or, "So-and-so should be here listening to this".
