The Identity of Jesus Christ

Who was, and who is, Jesus Christ? People by the millions have discussed this question for two thousand years.

Some people who present themselves as New Testament scholars spend their time trying to persuade everyone that there’s nothing supernatural in the New Testament at all. Jesus was “just a man”, and his disciples were either deluded, deceived, or misquoted. According to these “experts” and to numerous other teachers of varying descriptions, Jesus “never claimed to be God”. He was “misrepresented”.

So much for the wolves in very scanty sheeps clothing, because, thank the Lord, there are also New Testament scholars who will reason powerfully that the opposite is true. Not that I need “experts”: I don’t. Scripture is abundandly clear that Jesus Christ claimed to be the Son of God, was seen to be divine, and was recognized by his disciples to be so. History paints the picture of an incredible message that turned the world upside down. Decide who you will believe: I will side with the believers. Jesus is my Lord and my God. The wise conclusion from what I share here is that we need to get down on our knees and worship He who inhabits eternity.

The Bible is our main source for the identity of Jesus. You wouldn’t check for the virtues of the Democratic Party in a Republican Party publication because of the obvious threat of bias. For the same reason, you shouldn’t go to an unbeliever to find out if you should believe. If you go to a shoe shop to get a phone, you likely won’t find one. You need to consider the Book that claims to be that divine message from our creator; you need to go and find out what it claims about who the Christ is. In this post I’ll outline some of the central Biblical arguments behind the Jesus-is-God belief, and then I will document some of the Scriptural references.

MOTIVATION FOR THE MURDER OF THE CHRIST

You could study the divinity of Jesus Christ in the Scriptures for the rest of your life, because the Bible is the living Word of God. It is deeper than any of us can fathom. The more you delve the more you can find to demonstrate the fact that Jesus Christ was and is no mere man. Not only did the followers of Jesus recognize him to be the Son of God, but his enemies knew without doubt that he claimed to be so. That’s why they crucified him: how could you miss it? Anyone reading more than a few verses of the gospels would see it in one way or another. Here’s one example:

For this reason they tried all the more to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God (John 5:18).

It’s no good trying to make out that we’re all ‘gods’ or that we can become gods: it was Jesus who the Jews specifically focused on, and Jesus acknowledged and proclaimed lordship over all his disciples-not equality with them. Here’s an example from another gospel:

And the high priest answered and said to Him, “I put You under oath by the living God: Tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God!”

Jesus said to him, “It is as you said. Nevertheless, I say to you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven.”

Then the high priest tore his clothes, saying, “He has spoken blasphemy! What further need do we have of witnesses? Look, now you have heard His blasphemy!

(Matthew 26:63-65 NKJV).

WALL-TO-WALL MIRACLES

Ask yourself what man can do miracles. I mean real miracles, and not the fakers who are running around claiming to be healers, or claiming to be apostles. With a word or a touch Jesus Christ healed lepers, made the blind see, and raised the dead. Is that the work of a man? Jesus said he “came from heaven”. He walked on water. He fed thousands of people. He turned water to wine. He is, according to the testimony of those who knew him, and of the ancient prophet Isaiah, God made flesh: he is “God with us”. He is, says Scripture, The one and only, and not just “a” Son of God.

THREE PERSONS-COMMON ATTRIBUTES

Please don’t understand me: I am not a “oneness” believer. The Biblical God is a trinity. He is three persons in one. Numerous times in Scripture the Son of God-the Christ-is described with the same attributes, characteristics, powers, plans, and authority as the Father himself. Here are some examples. You will find most of the Scripture references below at the lower part of the post.

OUR SAVIOUR

The Bible asserts that God is our Savior. In fact, according to His words in Isaiah, He’s the only one:

I, even I, am the Lord, And besides Me there is no savior (Isaiah 43:11).

However, Scripture also states that Jesus Christ is our Savior, and at that, the only one. Peter said:

And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12).

John said:

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16).

THE FIRST AND THE LAST, AND OUR CREATOR

The Bible tells us that God is “the first and the last”, but it also states that the Son of God is “the first and the last”. In scripture, God is said to be our creator, but the Son of God is also declared to be our creator. (See references below).

THE JUDGE, THE ETERNAL ONE, THE WATER-WALKER

In Biblical Scripture, God is the eternal One, and Jesus Christ is the eternal One. God is the Judge, and the Son is the Judge. God “treads on the waves of the sea” (Job 9:8) and Jesus Christ walked on water (Matthew 14:26). Notice here what the disciples did after seeing Jesus walk on the water:

Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God” (John 14:33).

THE “I AM”, and “THE ONE THEY HAVE PIERCED”

In describing God, the Old Testament says he is “the one they have pierced”, and in the New Testament, Jesus Christ is the one who was pierced for our sins. God the Father calls himself the “I AM” (Exodus 3:14) and in the New Testament, Jesus Christ calls himself the “I AM” (John 8:58).

THE COMING ONE

God is the one who will “come”, and Jesus is the one who will “come”, in “power and great glory” (See remaining references below).

THE LIFE-GIVER

In the New Testament, God raised Jesus from the dead, and Christ raised  himself from the dead. God is the giver of eternal life, and Jesus Christ is the one who gives eternal life.

THE KING, THE SHEPHERD.

God is our shepherd; the “King of Israel”, and “the King of the whole earth”. The Son also fulfills all these roles. Here’s an example:

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called ‘Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God…He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom…” (Isaiah 9:6).

Ary_Scheffer_-_The_Temptation_of_Christ_(1854)

Jesus stated plainly that he was One with the Father. The apostles called him God and “my Lord and my God”, and he did not correct them. Jesus accepted worship from them, something no man should do. Satan offered him the kingdoms of the world. Jesus called himself “Lord of the Sabbath”. He said that he was greater than Jonah and greater than the temple of God. He said that he is “The way, The truth, and The life”, and that he is “the bread of life”.

THE CHRIST IS THE, NOT “A” SON OF GOD:

“Again the high priest asked him, ‘Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed one?’ ‘I am’, said Jesus” (Mark 14:61-62);

“The high priest said to him, ‘I charge you under oath, by the living God: Tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God.’ ‘Yes, it is as you say, Jesus replied” (Matthew 26:63-64).

THE JEWS HAD JESUS EXECUTED BECAUSE HE CLAIMED TO BE GOD:

“Jesus said to them, ‘I have shown you many great miracles from the Father. For which of these do you stone me? ‘We are not stoning you for any of these,’ replied the Jews, ‘but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God” (John 10:31-33);

“Our great God and Savior Jesus Christ” (Paul-Titus 2:13);

The Word was God”… “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us” (John-John 1:1 and 14).

JESUS WAS AND IS WORSHIPPED, AND ACCEPTS WORSHIP:

First, note that only God is to be worshipped (Deuteronomy 8:19; Revelation 22:8-9);

“Then those who were in the boat worshipped him, saying, ‘Truly you are the Son of God’” (Matthew 14:32-33).

“And again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says, ‘Let all God’s angels worship him’” (Hebrews 1:6);

“…many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders. In a loud voice they sang: ‘Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise” (Revelation 5:11-12);

“When they saw him, they worshipped him; but some doubted” (Matthew 28:17);

JESUS CLAIMED THE GREATNESS OF GOD:

He said he was Lord of the Sabbath (Matthew 12:8 with verse 2);

He said he was greater than Jonah (i.e. not just a prophet-Luke 11:32);

He said he was greater than the temple of God (Matthew 12:1-8);

He said he was the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:5)

He said he was the bread of life (John 6:35)

He said that even before Abraham was born he was the “I AM” (John 8:58);

He said he is omnipresent (Matthew 18:20).

JESUS DISPLAYED THE POWER OF GOD:

He healed all sicknesses and diseases (Matthew 4:23-24);

He had total power over the elements (Matthew 8:23-27);

He had power over death (John 6:40; 11:23-27);

He walked on water (Matthew 14): only God can walk on water (Job 9:8).

He was/is omniscient (John 4:16-19, 28-29; 1:47-49; 11:11-14).
